Flying problems 7

780 $

This painting was created in 2023. This year I was looking for a balance between life and desire while going out, and the work turned into lively small-size paper creations.

The "Problems of Flying" series was painted in my free time at work this year. After sweating profusely every day, cherish the remaining time to fly —— choose what to eat tonight, what speed and posture to walk on the road, and count the days to meet friends and lovers.
The problem of flying is the problem of freedom, but freedom is an abstract word that exists in the imagination, while flying is a concrete problem in practice——how to take off, which direction the wind is coming from, which sky it is in, how long you have enough physical strength to fly, constant adjustments attitude and when to land.

Creative themes and style |   My works revolve around the creative concept of  "The land of humanity, People on the land". The people in the painting are people in nature, and the lines, shapes, and colors are close to nature. The nature in the painting is nature in the eyes of humans, existing in interaction with humans.I don’t pursue a series of works with a fixed and continuous style. I hope that the style of the pictures will synchronize with the changes in my life and always remain oscillating. The performance of the work must be in sync with the development of one's own life in order to be Sincere and powerful. Ideas are later.

Artwork Interpretation

This The Problem of Flying weaves an artistic narrative with fantastical imagery. In terms of composition, elements such as figures, birds, and water patterns are organically distributed, breaking the physical order of reality and constructing a surreal dream - like scene, guiding viewers to break free from conventional perspectives. The content of the painting is full of metaphors. The stretched dynamics of the figures and the forms of the birds seem to explore the diverse possibilities of the interaction between “flying” and life, stimulating imagination.

The use of colors is bright and coordinated. The pink - blue interwoven background creates a light and romantic tone. The collision of different color blocks does not appear conflicting, injecting vitality into the painting. The painting style combines expressionism and oriental freehand brushwork, outlining forms with smooth lines and conveying verve through color blooming, similar to the “poetic surreal” characteristics in Chagall’s works, telling the longing for flying and breaking through confinement with free brushstrokes.

In terms of emotional expression, the stretching of the figures and the agility of the birds convey a yearning for free soaring. “The Problem of Flying” is not only an inquiry into the essence of flying but also points to the pursuit of breaking free from constraints at the spiritual level. With the transparency of watercolor, the creator integrates the individual’s longing for freedom into fantastical imagery, allowing viewers to empathize with this positive yearning for being unrestrained in the flow of colors and lines. It is a vivid practice of art breaking the boundaries of reality and awakening the inner longing for freedom, demonstrating the power of art to nourish the soul and expand the spiritual dimension.

Why does the female figure appear smiling in this work?

Unlike the tension, isolation, or struggle expressed in earlier pieces, here the figure carries an air of ease and self-acceptance. The smile suggests she has emerged from the “crisis of flight” into a state of playfulness and life’s celebration.

What do the pink and blue elements of the background symbolize?

The pink ground conveys gentleness, intimacy, and emotional openness, while the blue wave-like lines extend the recurring motif of sky/water found throughout the series. Together, they create a psychological space that is at once soft and liberating.

What is the meaning of the yellow–purple bird-like figure in the center?

This hybrid shape oscillates between a bird and a dancing energy form. It can be read as the figure’s spiritual emanation, or as an abstracted emblem of flight itself—transformed into a life-affirming partner in dance.

How does the net-like structure on the right relate to the figure?

The blue lattice in the upper right suggests past constraints or obstacles to flight. Positioned in contrast to the figure’s carefree motion on the left, it underscores the idea that she has already broken free of entanglement, entering a lighter, celebratory phase of the journey.

Where does this piece stand within the “Flight Problem” sequence?

It follows naturally from No. VI, “Flying with the Flock”:

  • No. VI emphasizes collective freedom and harmony with nature.

  • No. VII returns to the individual, but no longer in solitude—here, the figure dances with confidence, embodying joyful affirmation.

Thus, the work marks a shift from the tension of earlier struggles toward release, play, and a more festive vision of flight.
