Falling fog

Collect

This painting was created in 2018. With the end of the sketching class this year, my sketching journey stopped at a few simple drawings for Miss Hui. Of course, my oil painting skills have also improved a lot in the past year or so, and I have carefully explored my own way of speaking.

Creative themes and style |   My works revolve around the creative concept of  "The land of humanity, People on the land". The people in the painting are people in nature, and the lines, shapes, and colors are close to nature. The nature in the painting is nature in the eyes of humans, existing in interaction with humans.I don’t pursue a series of works with a fixed and continuous style. I hope that the style of the pictures will synchronize with the changes in my life and always remain oscillating. The performance of the work must be in sync with the development of one's own life in order to be Sincere and powerful. Ideas are later.

Artwork Interpretation

In terms of modeling, the figure is simplified into soft blocks and curves, abandoning realistic details. It shares a kinship with Chagall's surreal paintings in “poetic deformation of forms” —— by simplifying the modeling, the figure merges into the hazy background, blurring the boundary between reality and illusion, and evoking spiritual reverie.

The composition breaks conventional order. The figure lies on the upper part, and the dark circular symbol below echoes the hazy background vertically, similar to the wisdom of Sanyu's paintings in “controlling complexity with simplicity”. Minimalist symbols create suspense, guiding viewers to explore the spiritual code. The color features “low - saturation haziness”, with light gray and pale blue interweaving like a veil, reminiscent of the “color mist” in Monet's late Water Lilies, wrapping complex emotions in gentle tones.

In brushwork, thin coating and blooming blend. The figure's skin shows delicate brushstrokes, and the background blooming blurs object boundaries, echoing Zao Wou - ki's abstract paintings in “spiritual flow of brushstrokes”, building a spiritual artistic conception with hazy brushstrokes. Through simplified figures and mysterious symbols, the work conveys an individual's meditation in the spiritual fog. Emotions hide in the soft colors and simple modeling. Integrating surreal and abstract thinking, it continues the exploration of “spiritual metaphor” and opens an implicit path for artistic expression.

Recommended Works: Chagall's Birthday, Sanyu's Nude with Crossed Legs, and Monet's Water Lilies all explore the poetry and profundity of the spiritual world with unique artistic languages.

Q1: What state is the figure in?

A1: The figure sits nude by the water, body slightly leaning with one arm as support, poised between relaxation and stillness. Her face is almost blank, blurred by mist and light, stripping away individuality and turning her into a symbolic presence.

Q2: What is the role of the “black hole” circular motif?

A2: The dark circular void in the upper right resembles an eclipsed sun or a watching eye, set in opposition to the figure. It generates a sense of unease and mystery, as if swallowing the surrounding space, evoking notions of nothingness, abyss, or the cosmic unknown.

Q3: Why does the figure’s body carry multiple layers of color and flowing textures?

A3: The body is not rendered realistically but layered with blue, pink, and golden lines and textures, with even traces of dripping paint. This makes the figure appear both tangible and unstable—dissolving into mist and water—a metaphor for the fragility of flesh and existence.

Q4: What kind of atmosphere does the painting evoke?

A4: The atmosphere hovers between dream and reality: quiet and contemplative, yet tinged with an oppressive strangeness. Viewers may feel a sense of staring into an abyss, while at the same time being drawn into a meditative state by the colors and mist-like brushstrokes.

Q5: How can this work be interpreted?

A5: Descent into Mist can be seen as a meditation on body, time, and void: mist and water symbolize dissolution, the black hole stands for engulfing uncertainty, while the nude figure embodies the most vulnerable, direct form of life. It is both a questioning of existence and a silent gaze into the relationship between the individual and the cosmos.
