This painting was created in 2018. With the end of the sketching class this year, my sketching journey stopped at a few simple drawings for Miss Hui. Of course, my oil painting skills have also improved a lot in the past year or so, and I have carefully explored my own way of speaking.

Creative themes and style |   My works revolve around the creative concept of  "The land of humanity, People on the land". The people in the painting are people in nature, and the lines, shapes, and colors are close to nature. The nature in the painting is nature in the eyes of humans, existing in interaction with humans.I don’t pursue a series of works with a fixed and continuous style. I hope that the style of the pictures will synchronize with the changes in my life and always remain oscillating. The performance of the work must be in sync with the development of one's own life in order to be Sincere and powerful. Ideas are later.

Artwork Interpretation

This Studio uses a life - oriented perspective to freeze - frame the daily moment of artistic creation. In terms of modeling, the posture of the figure and the outline of the plaster statue are based on realism but not deliberately polished. It is similar to the relaxed feeling in Vuillard's depiction of indoor scenes. Vuillard focuses on the warmth of the daily life of relatives and friends, while this work captures the state of focused creation in the studio, using a natural modeling to convey the real texture of artistic practice.

The composition breaks the conventional balance order. It presents the studio space from an overhead perspective. The arrangement of the easel, figure, and tools seems random, but actually coincides with Cézanne's idea of “compositional composition” —— Cézanne explored the formal order through the layout of still lifes, while this work reconstructs the studio space with an overhead perspective. Let the familiar creative scene generate a unique formal beauty due to the perspective transformation, and the ordinary daily life also has an artistic examination.

The color application tends to “low - saturation harmony”. Neutral tones such as gray - brown and beige are dominant, creating a calm studio atmosphere. There are occasional bright color accents (such as the paint box), just like the use of “lonely colors” in Hopper's paintings, breaking the dullness with local brightening. However, Hopper mostly expresses urban loneliness, while this work conveys the focus and tranquility of the studio through colors, allowing emotions to precipitate in soft tones.

In terms of brushwork, thin and thick are combined: the thin coating on the figure's clothing reveals the agility of the brushstrokes, and the thick paint stacking on the background and easel strengthens the spatial texture, echoing the characteristic of “tactile brushstrokes” in Freud's paintings. Let every detail of the studio be “touchable and perceptible” through brushstrokes, which is a real depiction of the creative environment. The content focuses on the creative scene in a corner of the studio. The interaction between the figure and the plaster statue and the random placement of tools all tell the state of artistic creation integrating into daily life. The emotion is hidden in the uniqueness of the composition and the warmth of the colors, a simple record of the artistic exploration process. In contemporary painting, it integrates life - oriented narration and formal exploration, continuing realism's exploration of “art in the ordinary”, and injecting a real and perceptible liveliness into the depiction of artistic scenes.
